Well, it was painful almost from start to finish - a friend who went to the game with me likened it to a bout where one boxer was drunk and the other's left arm stopped working in the 5th round - but we got the win and that's all that matters. Random thoughts:

• David Wilson is fast. Though I have to say I can't remember another time that I watched a special teams touchdown with my hands in my pockets. From my angle I could see what looked like a huge hole as soon as he caught the kickoff and thought, "I'm pretty sure he's going to score." And he did.
  
• We've now fallen behind 17-0, 10-0, 17-0, and 14-0 in four games this year and come back to take the lead in all four of those games (and win all but the Boise State game). At some point this is going to have to stop or it's going to cost us a game we need to win (I'm guessing the ACC Championship).
  
• Similarly, the offense is going to need to be better than this. It would have been nice for the D to perform better, but really they were good enough to win. The only reason the game was close was because the offense bogged down for more than two quarters against a defense that NC State shredded for 45 points.
  
• After being a real weapon four weeks in a row, wow was Jayron Hosley terrible on punt returns tonight.
• It's a big bummer that Nesbitt got hurt and is now out for the year - it's a crappy way to win a game and a crappy way for a good player to end his career (though I guess he could be back for their bowl game).
  

So are the Terps going to meet us in Charlotte for the ACC Championship?

Random Election Thoughts

Per requests from BMR and SS, here are some random election thoughts:

• My representative, Rick Boucher, was one of just a handful of surprising house results, according to Nate Silver's model. Not sure what to say about it...he was one of the most valuable Congressmen in the country for Democrats - a moderate Democrat in a pretty Republican district - and I guess his vote for Cap and Trade and the general Republican mood was just too much for him to sustain. I was surprised that Tom Perriello came closer than he did - I guess there's something to be said for running on your record to motivate your base to turn out. Speaking of which....
  
• So what happened yesterday? Basically (1) the economy sucks and (2) old people showed up and young people didn't. Kind of depressing (and I don't mean in a "wow, it sucks that we lost" kind of way, but rather a "wow, our country is pretty apathetic" kind of way) that huge swings in our government can basically be dictated by who feels like showing up to do what took me about 10 minutes to do from the time I left my house to the time I got back.
  
• I wonder how many of yesterday's voters know that our current huge deficits are not the result of spending skyrocketing under Obama?
• To some extent I think it's bad for the Dems in the short run that they maintained the Senate - if the GOP controlled all of Congress, it would be all the best for demonstrating the contrast between them and Obama and easier to blame them for the continuing economic malaise (which will continue absent substantial intervention).
• [From CloneBook] This isn't really related to the election, but this graph really illustrated how much of a role trust plays in politics - the extent to which voters mostly just follow politicians from "their" party irrespective of what policies they pursue, just as they would follow their favorite football team or whatever. So when Barack Obama proposes basically the same health care reform that ...the GOP promoted in 1994, Republicans call him a socialist. And when he also basically maintains Bush's policies on civil liberties and national security, the Left barely manages a whimper.

On a related note, holy crap is Virginia Tech football awesome and man are we going to destroy Georgia Tech tomorrow night!

Gut-punch

Well, for his first live football game, my kid got to witness college football history: The second time that a ranked team has ever lost to a Division I-AA (FCS) team, after Michigan's stunner to Appalachian State a few years ago. So in other words, he got to watch the worst performance in Virginia Tech football history.

Obviously, this was a terrible, terrible performance. Still, I think Matt Hinton is very, very wrong when he says that VT is "a truly awful team right now." First of all, there were some obvious mitigating factors:

• They had had less than five days since their previous game, by far the shortest turnaround I've ever heard of in college or pro football. The game on Monday ended at midnight or so, so they didn't get back to Blacksburg until probably at least Tuesday afternoon. Today's game was at 1:30. A coach doesn't accept that kind of schedule unless they are damn sure they can beat the second opponent with hardly any preparation. Apparently Beamer wasn't sure enough.
  
• Moreover, they were coming off a devastating loss, a game against a big-time opponent that they had led for probably 75% of the second half, then lost with a minute left. It's hard to imagine a scenario - quick turnaround, disappointing loss, crappy opponent - where a team could be more down for a game.
  
• It was pouring pretty much throughout the game today. It started right at kick-off and only came down harder as the game went on.
• This game was a borderline neutral-site game. Tech students and alums were fairly liberal in giving tickets to JMU fans, presumably because we beat them 90-0 in the last two games combined and it didn't figure to be much of a game. Moreover, because we took an early lead and our defense was dominating (outside of a fluky 77-yard TD, they had something like 17 yards in the first half) and because of the pouring rain, a surprising number of VT fans left early. (I'll admit to being guilty on this count, though only because I was responsible for a soaking wet two-year-old. Being a parent is a bitch sometimes.) It wasn't scary at all in the first half, so I think everyone just assumed that VT would coast to something like a 27-7 victory.
  
• This was pretty clearly a fluky loss. Case in point: VT punted zero times today. But an interception, two fumbles, a turnover on downs, and three field goals meant that JMU didn't have to do much on its possessions to win.

Moreover, five days ago VT stood toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country and played them even. (Unless you want to argue that Boise State isn't one of the best teams in the country, but they're returning 20 of 22 starters from last year's 14-0 squad, so I don't really see it.) So to say Tech is an awful team right now is the laziest kind of "what have you done for me lately" analysis.

So, a prediction: Tech has some problems on the defensive line, and maybe on the offensive line, too. We might not make it to 10 wins for the whateverth straight year, but we're going to win 8-9 games, make a bowl, and have a shot at the Coastal Division of the ACC like we always do. And you'll never hear me say "X team played really shitty today. Never mind all other evidence, man do they ever suck."

Anyway, did I mention that VT played embarrassingly shitty today?

This is just about the last thing we (meaning Virginia Tech fans) need. If we'd lost to Wake Forest tomorrow, people would have written it off as a loss to a good tournament team. Now that we're facing Miami, if we lose (and I think Miami is a lot better than most people think), people could see it as a reason to leave us out of the NCAA tournament.I guess that means we'll just have to win.
