Redskins 13, Cowboys 7

I don't watch much NFL these days, but I watched most of this one and damn if it wasn't crazy as shit - in particular, those two half-ending plays were absolutely ridiculous:
  • Dallas runs an offensive play with four seconds left in the first half and everyone assumes it's going to be a Hail Mary. But instead, it winds up being a half-assed lateral and Tashard Choice fumbles as he tries to break a meaningless tackle, which is then returned for Washington's only TD of the game (and, eventually, the game-deciding points) with 00:00 on the clock.
  • Dallas has the ball at the Washington 12 with 00:03 left in the game, down 13-7. Romo escapes from the pocket and flips the ball to a wide-open Roy Williams for what appeared to be the game-winning touchdown. But the officials had called a penalty (for a very obvious hold as it turned out) and, rather than losing, the Redskins won as the game ended on the offensive penalty.
Crazy. Congrats BD1 and BD2...

P.S. That call against Calvin Johnson's should-have-been game-winning catch today was atrocious...

  1. Look at Head go. Two days and two posts about football. Good stuff. I admitedly fell asleep during the 3rd quarter of this game but found it pretty interesting. My observations:
    1. Neither of these teams looked very good.
    2. Jason Garret is a TERRIBLE play caller. Throw another bubble screen for -2 yards. Dumbass.
    3. If the Egles are dumb enough to stay with Kevin Kolb the Giants are winning this division by two games.
    4. Portis still looks old and slow, glad he isn't on my fantasy team.
    5. Football is awesome.

  2. In particular I thought both of the offensive lines struggled a fair bit with the opposing defensive lines. Obviously this was the biggest problem for Dallas - Barron alone had three (mostly gratuitous) holds in the second half. This may have been the reason Garrett called so many screens - if the o-line can't block anyone, you might as well tell them not to try and then try to throw over the top of them.

The Redskins were weird - they didn't look too bad (though I only saw their opening drive and the second half) but they couldn't score and their stats were not impressive at all. The receivers had a lot of drops down the stretch and the running game got going a bit at the end, but I would still be somewhat concerned despite the win...

Vick's performance was ridiculous, huh? Still, I wouldn't make too much out of a single game - Vick was pretty inconsistent even when he was at his best with the Falcons, and I'm guessing Reid knows what he's doing with Kolb (he certainly has a pretty good track record with QBs). Also, the Packers spent all week preparing for Kolb, so it's not too surprising that they struggled when the Eagles switched gears to Vick. I expect that a defense that was preparing for him would have fared better. It's not uncommon for backups to perform surprisingly well at first, then struggle as defenses learn more about them.

  3. Yeah both o-lines were pretty pathetic. Barron is just plain terrible, all he does is hold. Why is he still in the league? There is nobody better than him? Neither team just really looked very sharp in any phase of the game. Even as low scoring as it was I didn't think either defense looked dominant, it was just crappy offenses...

They just have no NFL caliber WRs. Moss plays hard but he's a midget and is at best a good #2 option. The rest of them just aren't worthy of playing time on an NFL team. You look at the Giants and with Smith, Nicks, and Manningham you have three WRs that are bigger play makers than anyone on the Skins. That's fine if you have a dominant running game but the Skins were getting 3.5 yards a carry, nothing to get excited about...

Vick looked pretty damn good. And even before Kolb got hurt they were bringing him in every 5th or 6th play so I'm not so sure how sold on Kolb Reid is to be honest. We'll see what happens, either way I think the Giants looked like the best team in the division yesterday.

  4. I actually think Moss is pretty good, but then I haven't paid much attention to the NFL in three years or so, so that could be coloring my judgment. I just looked up the 'Skins receiver depth chart...where was Joey Galloway yesterday? Did he not play? Or was he just invisible?

There are a fair number of commentators who are suggesting that Barron might not be on the Cowboys much longer... Though really, he's a backup playing because of injuries, so I'm sure they will think very carefully before cutting him.
